Wendy Hayes
The first publicly named victim of Mark Rathbun was 19-year-old Wendy Hayes.
According to police reports and court documents, at about 2:30 a.m. of July 28th 1989, Mark Rathbun, dressed only in underwear, entered Hayes' home through open window on Grand Avenue on the edge of Belmont Shore
Mark Rathbun had an argument with his mother and decided to sleep in this backyard which was off an alley. When Mark Rathbun later got hungry, he entered Hayes' home. He then pounced on her, pinned her to the bed and ordered her not to scream. He told Hayes he would not hurt her, that he was just hungry as he continued to hold her arm to prevent her from leaving. The woman gave him flour tortillas, Popsicles and frozen turkey.
After Mark Rathbun left the house, and officers searching the neighborhood found him in a yard on Vista Street, where he had hidden his frozen turkey and Popsicles.
Mark Rathbun pleaded guilty a month later to residential burglary and false imprisonment by using violence.
