1967 through 1996

       In just one short lifetime, Mark Rathbun has been arrested, held or charged on 73 felonies in two states.  He has been found guilty of 67 felonies, predominately crimes against women. 

       Provided he and behaves himself in prison, and that further advancements in DNA technology don’t link him to other unsolved crime scenes, we can expect Mr. Mark Rathbun to be a free man after 1136 years plus ten life terms, or sometime around 3864.

 

Biographical Chronology


1967 – 1968
Alice Rathbun met Joshua Godlined probably while he was stationed at a naval base in the Philippines. She was a waitress at the base.

1969
Joshua Godlined was killed in action at the Mekong River.

1/24/70
Mark Rathbun was born to Alice Rathbun somewhere in the Philippines.

1974
Mark Rathbun first learned about his father and his fate in Vietnam.

Through 1984
Mark Rathbun was raised by his mother in Olongapo City. He learned English from American neighbor children.

1984
Alice Rathbun relocated to Long Beach, where she had two sisters.  Alice Rathbun and her son entered the United States through Hawaii, where she also had a sister. They stayed there a few weeks before going to Long Beach. 

September 1984
Alice and Mark Rathbun arrived in Long Beach and Mark Rathbun began attending Rogers Middle School.

August 1985
Fifteen-year-old Mark Rathbun was arrested on suspicious of being a peeping Tom.

September 1985
Mark Rathbun attended Long Beach Polytechnic High School. He was very active with friends at Poly High and was also an avid volleyball player.

Circa 1986
Mark Rathbun joined the Reserve Officers Training Program.

June 1987
Mark Rathbun dropped out of high school after June 1987.

Circa 1987 Seventeen-year-old Mark Rathbun was arrested on peeping Tom charges. Per a post arrest interview of Alice Rathbun, at age 17 Mark Rathbun was convicted to burglary and trespassing. He was sent to a youth camp. There he spoke to a priest who advised him to seek psychiatric counseling.

1988
Mark Rathbun graduated from Long Beach School for Adults.

Early 1989
Mark Rathbun pleaded guilty to two charges of misdemeanor trespassing.

7/28/89
After having a fight with his mother, Mark Rathbun broke into a Long Beach woman's home wearing only his boxer shorts and a T-shirt pulled over his head. He held the 19-year-old woman captive and demanded food. She gave him tortillas, a Popsicle and other items before he fled without physically harming her.

Summer 1989
Mark Rathbun was arrested after he broke into a home in Belmont Shore and took a beer. He was sentenced to a month in jail and a year on probation.

Undated
Nineteen-year-old Mark Rathbun was arrested on felony burglary charges after he broke into a house in Belmont Shore.

8/1/89
Mark Rathbun was charged in Long Beach Municipal Court with residential burglary and false imprisonment by violence.  The complainant simply signed his name as D.L. Pressley.  The prosecutor on the case was Deputy District Attorney Charles E. Boag

8/9/89
Mark Rathbun, represented by newly admitted attorney and public defender Eugene Hall, appeared in open court and pleaded guilty to residential burglary and false imprisonment by violence. Hon. James Brian Pierce advised Mark Rathbun that he was facing a six-year maximum if he violated his probation, and that he was permitted to plead for ten months in the county jail, and that if he violated his parole he would go back to prison for another year.

Further proceedings were set for 8/30/89; bail was set at $7,500. Rathbun remained in custody through the next hearing date.

8/30/89
Mark Rathbun was granted probation for a period of 3 years, but had to first spend 10 months in the county jail. He was given credit for 51 days in custody, event though he had only been in custody 34 days (the additional 17 days were credited for “good time / work time). Rathbun was further required to seek and maintain schooling, training or employment as approved by his probation officer, and maintain a residence, also as approved by his probation officer. Further, he was fined $100.

Circa 1990’s
Alice Rathbun attended St. Anthony’s Catholic Church. Mark Rathbun also attended until circa 1999, when he told his mother that he was attending Our Lady of Refuge in a different part of the Long Beach area.

Alice Rathbun knows that her son is addicted to marijuana and feared he used crack cocaine.

Early 1990’s
Mark Rathbun held a series of low-end low-paying jobs including bagging groceries, grooming dogs, delivering Christmas trees, and working as a helper to a handyman and to a plumber.

6/5/91
The Court read and considered Mark Rathbun’s Probation Officer’s report. Probation was continued on the same terms and conditions.

Undated
Mark Rathbun attended classes at Golden West Community College in Huntington Beach. It was there that he found a pamphlet about job opportunities in the fishing industry in Seattle.

1995
Mark Rathbun relocated to Seattle. The move was prompted by a flier that advertising get-rich commercial fishing jobs in Alaska (sic).

10/1/1995
Seattle Police cited Mark Rathbun for driving without a license, without insurance, and with an open container of alcohol. (Ref LA Times 11/20/02 / no court record found).

Circa 1995
Mark Rathbun worked as a commercial fisherman.
